Yup. Photography is kind of a new hobby for me, but I've loved taking pictures ever since I was a little kid.
I've been taking pictures since I was about 8 years old. I started in the 1980's with a little point and shoot camera that used 126 film. I don't remember exactly what kind of camera it was, a Kodak "instamatic" or something like that. My parents got it for me when I was in like 2nd grade, but it was really OLD even then. It was kind of an antique. I think they got it cheap at a thrift shop or something, just because I wanted a camera and they thought it would be something easy and simple for a kid to use. I loved taking pictures and I probably took it everywhere. I still remember what the 126 film cartridges looked like.
At the time, we lived in a small suburb near Chicago. It was kind of like a small town and everyone got to know each other. I remember I used to take my film all the time to this small store to get it developed. It was a small general store called "Ben Franklin's." They had a photo lab. This was around 1985 or 1986...so it was ALL film back then, there was no such thing as digital cameras. The lady that worked in the store also worked at my elementary school. So I really got to know her, and I remember she used to tell people that I was becoming quite the "little photographer." She was probably the nicest person ever. She was old then, so I'm sure she's probably
gone now
I wish to God I could remember her name. Even afer all these years, I still remember her and I remember how nice she always was to me. That Ben Franklin's store is gone now too.
Later on, I used a 110 camera and that was mostly what I used to take pictures as a kid in the 1990s. I can't say that it was "real photography" since I mostly just took snapshots of my friends and when I went I went on school field trips. But I loved taking pictures, and I especially liked taking landscape photos.
I got into other hobbies over the years, and I really didn't get seriously interested in photography until recently. I used digital cameras for a while, but I got back into using film and I love it. Now I use almost exclusively film...35mm and 120 size.
I love taking landscape photos, because it offers me a chance to escape. It gives me a chance to reflect and have some time to myself. I try to capture pictures with a tranquil landscape, even in the middle of a city or suburb. Later on, my favorite part is just looking and the picture and being drawn into it. I feel like I'm standing there again, and I can see things in the picture that I didn't even realize were there when I took the picture.
I also really like to develop the film and pictures myself. It's a lot of fun but it's also very rewarding. After all the work you've put into it, it's very rewarding and amazing to see that your effort paid off.
Often, when I take pictures it's like I'm seeing it for the first time too.
