a good beginners book about photography?

I've always been disappointed with the bad photos my cheap point-and-shoot camera makes, so I just treated myself to a D90 kit. Now I'd feel that all that money is going to waste if I don't learn to use it properly. So I need a good beginner's book for Digital Photography. I don't mind if it is very technical; in fact, I'd love it if it goes deep into theory, as long as it explains the basics, too. Something meant as a textbook for aspiring professional photographers will do nicely; please none of this "I'll hide the complexity behind bad jokes" Scott Kelby type of books.

It might be simpler than what you want, but you can find a good basic beginners manual at your local Boy Scout office. Photography is one of the merit badges that scouts can earn, and the booklets published by BSA usually can provide a good foundation to build on. It's written for someone at about the 6th or 7th grade level, but that doesn't mean the information isn't good.
