For a Black and White photography exhibit, what is the best matte color?
I am having the second annual showing of my late grandfather's black and white photography. He was a photojournalist, not an "artsy" photographer.
This exhibit will feature Presidents and First Ladies.
For the exhibit last year, it was all black and white photos, but with various subject matter. As a result, a variety of frames and mattes (not sure proper spelling in this case) were used. This proved to be a mistake, since I felt it detracted from the show.
I would like to establish a theme this year with the frames, and more particularly the mattes. Since several photos are included, price is an issue. For this reason, I tend to lean towards the less expensive black frames.
For the matte????????
Gray seems to work, but..... there are so many shades. Flat black can be a little "rigid" at times (in my opinion.)
I would like a combination of consistency, practicality, and... affordability.
Suggestions please.
For black and white, I like a very slightly off-white color in the tan or creme direction. See what the "white" color is in the prints and match it. Use the same color throughout to unify the exhibit.
Check Michael's for frames, as they are almost always having a 2-for-1 or a 40% off sale. You can get nice 11x14 frames for $15-20 most of the time.
